21Shares ETPs: crypto in a securities account
21Shares issues exchange-traded products on bitcoin, ether and other crypto assets, which investors buy through an ordinary securities account without a crypto wallet. Ophelia Snyder and Hany Rashwan launched the company in Zurich in July 2018. 21Shares is a subsidiary of FalconX.
How a 21Shares ETP works
The single-asset ETPs from 21Shares track bitcoin, ether or another crypto asset and are physically backed: the issuer holds the coins behind each unit. Index ETPs hold a basket rebalanced at set intervals, such as the 21Shares Crypto Basket 10 Core ETP, and the range also includes staking ETPs such as the 21Shares Ethereum Core Staking ETP. 21Shares holds the assets with institutional custodians; Copper names 21Shares among its custody clients. Crypto ETP explains the structure and its risks, and crypto index covers basket products.
Listings in Switzerland, Germany and beyond
21Shares launched HODL, the world's first crypto ETP, on the SIX Swiss Exchange. 21Shares reports more than 50 crypto ETPs, more than 5 billion US dollars in assets under management and more than 10 exchanges, among them SIX, Euronext Amsterdam and Paris, BX Swiss, Nasdaq Dubai and the London Stock Exchange. In Germany, 21Shares lists several of its ETPs on Deutsche Börse's Xetra, as Crypto Valley describes. In the US, 21Shares runs ETFs, and the Ark 21Shares Bitcoin ETF signed custody agreements with BitGo, according to BitGo's press page.
