Crypto in Cyprus
Cyprus is home to many investment firms and online brokers, all licensed by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC). The same authority licenses crypto firms under MiCA, and since January 1, 2026 Cyprus taxes gains from crypto assets at a flat 8 percent. Dated events on digital assets are in the calendar below.
The 8 percent tax on crypto gains
Cyprus reformed its tax system with effect from January 1, 2026. Profits from the disposal of crypto assets are taxed at a flat 8 percent, Andersen in Cyprus writes. Losses can only be set off against crypto gains of the same year and cannot be carried forward, Finance Magnates points out. The same reform raised the corporate tax rate from 12.5 to 15 percent.
Next to other countries, 8 percent is low. Germany taxes gains on crypto held for up to one year at the personal income tax rate and leaves them tax-free after that, and Portugal charges 28 percent on holdings under 365 days.
MiCA licenses from CySEC
CySEC authorizes crypto-asset service providers under MiCA, and MOKAS, the Cypriot financial intelligence unit, receives their reports on suspicious transactions. Intelium Law puts the application fee at 10,000 euros plus 5,000 euros a year, the minimum capital at 50,000 to 150,000 euros depending on the services, and the time to a license at six to twelve months. Firms registered under the old national regime could keep working until July 1, 2026.
CySEC stopped accepting new national registrations ahead of MiCA, Mondaq reported, so new firms had to apply for the MiCA license directly. A license from CySEC can be passported to Germany like one from Malta or Austria.
