Deutsche Börse Group

Deutsche Börse Group runs the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Xetra, Eurex and Clearstream, and through ISS STOXX it calculates the DAX. It describes itself as an international exchange organization and market infrastructure provider. The company is headquartered in Frankfurt and has a large office building, The Cube, in Eschborn just outside the city.

What the group is made of

On its business areas page Deutsche Börse lists four segments plus its IT. Investment Management Solutions holds the software firms SimCorp and Axioma and ISS STOXX, which supplies ESG data, governance research and the STOXX and DAX indices. Trading & Clearing holds Eurex for financial derivatives, EEX Group for commodities, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange for cash equities, 360T and Crypto Finance for foreign exchange and digital assets, and the market data business.

Fund Services is Clearstream's fund platform Vestima, which handles orders, settlement and custody for funds. Securities Services is Clearstream's custody, collateral, lending and liquidity business, together with the D7 platform for digital securities.

From a Frankfurt exchange to a listed group

Deutsche Börse AG was founded in 1992, and its shares are part of the DAX. The Wikipedia article traces the roots of exchange trading in Frankfurt back to the city's medieval trade fairs. Two mergers failed on competition grounds: with NYSE Euronext, blocked by the European Commission in 2012, and with the London Stock Exchange Group, blocked in 2017. In 2023 the group bought the Danish investment software firm SimCorp for 3.9 billion euros.

The Frankfurt Stock Exchange itself is an entity under public law, which Deutsche Börse AG operates. Its management board and Exchange Council are described on the exchange's supervisory bodies page, and the page on trading in Frankfurt explains Xetra, Börse Frankfurt and the trading hours.

Digital assets inside the group

The same group now runs crypto trading, crypto custody and tokenized securities. Crypto Finance holds BaFin licenses for crypto trading and custody, 360T operates the crypto venue 3DX for institutions, Clearstream offers bitcoin and ether custody and the D7 DLT platform, and Eurex lists bitcoin and ether futures and options. The page on Deutsche Börse in crypto and digital assets describes each unit, and Eurex and Clearstream have pages of their own.
