Thredd payments: the processor behind fintech cards

Thredd is a London card issuer processor. Fintechs, banks and travel money firms issue debit, credit, prepaid and virtual cards on its platform, which authorizes each payment, checks it for fraud with AI and can let a card spend a stablecoin balance.

Card issuing infrastructure

Thredd calls itself "the AI-first issuer processor" for debit, credit, prepaid and virtual card programs. It was founded in 2007, has more than 130 clients in over 50 countries and teams in London, Newcastle, Singapore, Sydney and the US. Its fraud and risk management uses AI.

Card programs in the UK and Europe

For the UK and Europe, Thredd runs on an EU/UK landing zone at AWS, is certified with Visa, Mastercard and Discover and works with a network of licensed partners for clients without their own license. Its page for the region names 47 countries and over a billion transactions a year; case studies include Allica Bank, Caxton, Currensea, Fidoo and the small business account Holvi (Thredd). Banking as a service in Germany covers the license side of such programs.

For banking-as-a-service providers, the platform separates each client's card programs, with independent spending limits and monitoring rules. Banks can also use Thredd for a new card product alongside an existing processor. The European product offering includes debit, prepaid and credit programs on the same platform.

Cards that spend stablecoins

A Thredd card can draw on a stablecoin balance: the cardholder holds the stablecoin, and it is converted to fiat at the moment of payment. Thredd is a member of Mastercard's Crypto Partner Programme and works with Visa and Mastercard on real-time stablecoin settlement (Thredd). Stablecoin cards covers these products in Europe.

What is an issuer processor?

The company that approves or declines each card payment on behalf of the card issuer, keeps the card ledger and connects the issuer to Visa or Mastercard. Thredd does this for fintechs and banks that issue their own cards.

Where is Thredd based?

In London, with further teams in Newcastle, Singapore, Sydney and the US.
