Worldline payments in Europe

Worldline processes card and account payments for merchants and banks from Paris La Défense. In Germany its merchant business runs through PAYONE, a joint venture with the DSV Group of the savings banks. In the Netherlands it processed one of the first card payments that an AI agent started in production.

Payments for merchants and banks

Worldline calls itself "a European leader in payment services" and "your trusted European payments partner", with more than 13,400 employees and local experts in about 40 countries. Its business has three parts: merchant services, financial services for banks, and mobility and e-transactional services. Worldline came out of the IT group Atos and became independent in 2019 (Wikipedia).

Worldline in Germany: PAYONE

Worldline holds 60 percent of PAYONE in Frankfurt, and the DSV Group of the German savings banks holds 40 percent. PAYONE runs as an independent joint venture within Worldline's merchant services and focuses on Germany and Austria (Worldline). PAYONE has its own page.

A card payment started by an AI agent

Worldline, ING and Mastercard completed what they describe as Europe's first end-to-end agentic payment in production. A merchant's AI agent found concert tickets within an ING cardholder's budget in the Netherlands, and the purchase went through only after the cardholder approved it. Worldline processed the payment on its issuing and acquiring platforms, ING authorized it as the issuing bank, and Mastercard Agent Pay carried it across the Mastercard network (Worldline). Worldline states that it supports such payments across acceptance, acquiring, authentication and issuer processing. Agentic payments covers the protocols and the open questions on consent.

Wero and account-to-account payments

Worldline is on the list of acquirers and partners that the European Payments Initiative named for Wero e-commerce in Germany (EPI). Wero moves money between bank accounts on instant transfers, without a card scheme in between. Account-to-account payments compares the cost of such a payment with a card payment, using Worldline's own estimate, and Wero payments in Germany covers the rollout.
