hessian.AI
hessian.AI is the Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence. The center combines research across 13 universities in Hesse with support for companies and AI founders. The work includes computing infrastructure for training models and help with turning research into applications.
hessian.AI supports the transfer of research into business and society. The center provides technical services and training for companies and public institutions. High-performance computing helps research teams develop and test AI models, while cooperative research gives practitioners access to scientific expertise.
Research across the universities in Hesse
hessian.AI's research covers AI algorithms, AI systems and the interaction between artificial and natural intelligence. The aim is to develop systems that reason, recognize unfamiliar situations and adapt to them. TU Darmstadt is the center's lead university; the university network also includes Goethe University Frankfurt and Frankfurt School.
The Reasonable Artificial Intelligence research cluster, led by TU Darmstadt, examines how AI can learn with fewer resources while protecting data. Those research questions concern both the computing cost of a model and the conditions under which companies can use it.
The partnership with Futury
hessian.AI and Futury have agreed to combine technical validation with access to industry partners and growth capital. AI Startup Rising contributes research expertise; Futury contributes its programs and company contacts.
The cooperation includes plans for a joint accelerator at the Bertramshof in Frankfurt, joint events and coordinated funding support. The partners also intend to develop AI tools for matching talent and preparing investor documents. Futury's university backing includes Frankfurt School, TU Darmstadt, Goethe University and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
AI Startup Rising and the RISING accelerator
AI Startup Rising is the startup program of hessian.AI, TU Darmstadt, the University of Kassel and Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen. The program supports research teams as they assess whether an AI result can become a business. Technical feasibility and the requirements for data are part of that assessment.
The RISING accelerator is a four-month program for advanced AI startups in Germany that develop their own models. The focus is on scaling sales and entering international markets, with coaching and contacts to mentors and investors. The Ignition incubator covers an earlier stage of company development.
AI Service Center and computing infrastructure
The AI Service Center, hessian.AISC, helps companies and research teams train models and test applications. The service includes access to GPU computing, support for proofs of concept and training. Cooperative research gives users a route to working with scientists from the center.
External companies can apply for compute resources or services. The application describes the project and its computing needs. The AI Innovationlab provides another route to infrastructure and model development support. A financial institution evaluating a research project can use these services to investigate the model before deciding how to integrate it into business processes.
Commerzbank and simulations for foreign exchange trading
Professor Dominik L. Michels, a hessian.AI researcher at TU Darmstadt, and Commerzbank develop agent-based models of the foreign exchange market. Individual participants are modeled as agents that follow trading strategies and react to other participants. Price movements emerge from those interactions.
The research combines mathematical modeling with AI and market simulations. Trading strategies can be developed and evaluated under controlled conditions without placing orders in a real market. The project concerns market behavior and the analysis of trading decisions. These are concrete AI applications in finance in Frankfurt.
CovenantAI and credit agreement analysis
CovenantAI is a Connectom-funded project by Professor Sascha Steffen at Frankfurt School. The project uses language models to identify violations of credit agreement clauses in SEC filings. The analysis also distinguishes how a violation was resolved, for example through a waiver or an amendment.
The research uses sentence classification and retrieval augmented generation to extract covenant thresholds. Credit analysts can use this kind of research to investigate information in company disclosures. The project gives the university cooperation a direct connection to lending and financial document analysis.
EDITH and the national AI startup network
hessian.AI is part of the EDITH consortium together with the House of Digital Transformation and TechQuartier. EDITH Hessen helps small and medium-sized businesses and public administrations test digital technology before investing. AI and high-performance computing are among the hub's fields.
The strategic partnership with AI NATION connects Hessian research and computing infrastructure with a nationwide startup network. Selected teams gain access to workshops and contacts to industry representatives and investors. hessian.AI also nominates research-based startups from Hesse for the network.
Research on AI startups in finance
The AI Startup Landscape Hesse report (in German) examines startup financing by industry. Fintech and legal technology form one of the report's categories. The research compares funding patterns and discusses how a few large funding rounds can affect an industry's average.
The report is an analysis of the regional market. The financial research projects and startup programs above describe different routes from AI research to a financial application. Data science in finance covers the related methods and professional training.
AI in finance and Finance Loop
Finance Loop connects professionals who work on AI in finance, including financial document analysis and the use of agents. Finance Loop runs meetups and supports practical Claude agent workshops in Frankfurt. The research and cooperation at hessian.AI give professionals examples to discuss when assessing AI for their own work.
Finance Loop is a professional network and has the goal of driving the adoption of emerging technologies in finance, such as AI, digital payments, cloud and blockchain solutions. Professionals can join as members, and companies can work with Finance Loop through partnerships.
