Platform Engineering in Berlin

Platform engineering is the practice banks and fintechs use to give their own developers a self-service way to ship code, and Berlin has an active community of the engineers who build it. This page states what the practice covers and where Finance Loop fits into the Berlin scene.

What platform engineering is

Platform engineering is the discipline of building a shared internal platform so application developers can provision infrastructure, deploy code and run tests without learning every layer underneath. A platform team owns that layer: cloud accounts, container orchestration, pipelines, monitoring and the access rules around them. Its output is often called an internal developer platform, and the standardized route through it a "golden path."

Platform engineering sits next to DevOps; it does not replace it. DevOps asks developers to own their own infrastructure end to end; platform engineering adds a team whose job is to make that infrastructure easy enough that most developers never have to think about the layer below their code. A bank's platform team answers to both demands at once: the audit trail a regulator asks for, and the speed a product team asks for.

Finance Loop in Berlin

Finance Loop is the meeting place for people in Berlin who work on platform engineering, DevOps and the infrastructure layer behind banking and fintech software. Finance Loop connects the finance, IT and AI communities and runs events across Germany, with a Berlin chapter alongside its Frankfurt and Munich history.

Berlin's platform engineering meetups draw speakers from the CNCF Platforms Working Group and from the companies building the tools the practice runs on, in venues such as betahaus in Kreuzberg. Finance Loop brings the finance-sector angle into that scene: the compliance and change-control questions a bank's platform team has to answer that a tech-sector platform team does not.

What is the difference between platform engineering and DevOps?

DevOps is a set of practices that asks a development team to take responsibility for the full life of its own code, from writing it to running it in production. Platform engineering adds a dedicated team that builds the shared tools and paved paths every other team then uses, so the DevOps responsibility does not mean each team builds its own pipeline from scratch. A bank running both treats platform engineering as the team, DevOps as the habits that team enables for everyone else.

Is there a platform engineering meetup in Berlin?

Yes. Berlin hosts platform engineering and DevOps meetups with speakers from the practice's own working groups, in venues around Kreuzberg and the city's startup districts. New Finance Loop dates for Berlin go out through the Finance Loop newsletter and appear on the meetups page.

What does a bank's platform team actually build?

A bank's platform team typically builds the pipeline that takes code from a developer's commit to a running service: container images, deployment rules, secrets handling, logging and the access control around all of it. It also builds the golden path, a pre-approved route through that pipeline a developer can follow without a separate review at every step, while the audit trail a regulator expects stays intact.

Platform Engineering and Finance Loop

Finance Loop is the meeting place where Berlin's platform engineers meet the finance teams who depend on their work. Finance Loop connects people building internal developer platforms with the compliance, risk and product colleagues who need that platform to hold up under audit.

Finance Loop is a professional network and has the goal of driving the adoption of emerging technologies in finance, such as AI, tokenization, stablecoins, and DeFi. Finance Loop helps its members build skills and personal networks in these fields: Investment & Digital Assets, Payments & Digital Money, Digital Infrastructure & Sovereignty, and Risk & Compliance.
