SWIFT alternative payment systems and what they replace
Swift carries payment messages between more than 11,000 banks and other institutions. The systems called alternatives replace different parts of that: some only the messaging, some the settlement in a currency, some the whole chain. Most were built in countries that face sanctions or want their own currency used in trade. For a European bank or exporter the question is narrower: which of them a payment to China, the Gulf or India may touch, and what the euro area is building itself.
Why alternatives to Swift exist
Cutting a bank off from Swift is a sanctions tool. Swift disconnected Iranian banks under EU sanctions on March 17, 2012, and most reconnected in February 2016; in 2022 the EU, the UK, Canada and the US agreed to remove several Russian banks after the invasion of Ukraine, as Wikipedia records. A country that expects such a step builds its own channel first.
CIPS, the Chinese payment system
The Cross-Border Interbank Payment System clears and settles renminbi payments. It started on October 8, 2015 with 19 direct and 176 indirect participants. By June 2025 it had 176 direct and 1,514 indirect participants in 121 countries and regions, 261 of the indirect ones in Europe, and in 2025 it settled RMB 180.15 trillion, according to Wikipedia. CIPS uses Swift messaging for more than 80 percent of its transactions. For a German company paying a supplier in China in renminbi, the instruction often still travels over Swift while the settlement happens in CIPS.
SPFS, mBridge and BRICS Pay
SPFS is the messaging system the Bank of Russia built in 2014. It uses ISO 20022 formats and carries messages only, with no settlement of its own, as SuperKalam describes. Project mBridge is a shared ledger for payments in central bank digital currencies. The BIS names the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, the Bank of Thailand, the Digital Currency Institute of the People's Bank of China and the Central Bank of the UAE as founders; the Saudi Central Bank joined in 2024, the platform reached its minimum viable product in mid-2024, and the BIS handed the project to the partners in October 2024. BRICS Pay is a proposal of the BRICS Business Council from 2018 for a decentralized payment network, according to Drishti IAS.
Linking instant payment systems
Another approach keeps the banks and connects the domestic rails. Project Nexus links instant payment systems through one standard interface; in 2025 the central banks of India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand founded Nexus Global Payments to run it, as the BIS reports. The European Central Bank is preparing a link between TIPS and India's UPI and is studying a connection to Nexus. The page on cross-border instant payments follows that work, and stablecoin settlement and wholesale CBDC cover the tokenized route.

What is the Chinese alternative to SWIFT?
CIPS, the Cross-Border Interbank Payment System, run from Shanghai with the backing of the People's Bank of China. It settles payments in renminbi and has participants in 121 countries and regions, many of them indirect participants that reach it through a direct participant.
Does Europe have an alternative to SWIFT?
Inside the euro area, euro payments between banks settle in TARGET services such as T2 and TIPS, and a euro transfer to another SEPA country does not need the Swift chain. For other currencies Swift stays the main channel; the Eurosystem works on links between TIPS and fast payment systems abroad, starting with India.
Is mBridge a replacement for SWIFT?
mBridge settles payments in central bank digital currencies on a shared ledger, so it replaces messaging and correspondent accounts at once for its members. It covers the currencies of its participating central banks, and the BIS has handed it over to them.
