ABBL Luxembourg

The ABBL, the Luxembourg Bankers' Association, is the association of banks and other financial firms in Luxembourg. It was founded in 1939. Its members today include banks, investment firms, payment and e-money institutions and market infrastructure providers, and also the law firms, consultancies and auditors that work for them.

The ABBL speaks for its members to the government, the CSSF and the Banque centrale du Luxembourg, and it is a member of the European Banking Federation and the European Payments Council. It also publishes the collective agreement for bank employees, which sets the bank holidays. Its president is Yves Stein of Edmond de Rothschild Europe.

Mission, members and management

The ABBL describes its mission as to "sustainably promote regulated, innovative, and responsible financial services". Its members range from the large universal and private banks to payment institutions and service providers. Besides the ministries, the CSSF and the central bank, the ABBL works with the business federation UEL and the Economic and Social Council, and it keeps an office in Brussels for EU affairs. Financial education is the job of a separate body, the Fondation ABBL pour l'Éducation Financière.

Jerry Grbic has been CEO since April 2022. In October 2026 Paperjam reported that he is leaving the ABBL at the end of the month, with no successor named yet. Sandrine Roux has been secretary general since September 2025.

Wero, instant payments and the digital euro

In June 2025 the European Payments Initiative announced that Spuerkeess, BGL BNP Paribas, BIL, POST Luxembourg and Banque Raiffeisen would join Wero. According to the ABBL, Wero was to go live in Luxembourg by June 2026, and Payconiq, the country's mobile payment app, was to stop in September 2026.

In February 2025 the ABBL presented the Luxembourg results of the ECB's survey on consumer payment habits: 72 percent of people had access to instant payments and 57 percent used them, second only to the Netherlands. When the ECB picked 36 payment service providers for its digital euro pilot, two ABBL members were among them: Satispay Luxembourg and Worldline.

Bank holidays in Luxembourg

Banks in Luxembourg close on the legal public holidays and on two more days set by the collective agreement: Good Friday and the afternoon of December 24. The ABBL publishes the list of public and bank holidays for each year.
