Amazon Buy for Me
Amazon Buy for Me is a feature of the Amazon Shopping app in which an AI agent of Amazon buys a product on the website of another brand. Amazon started it in April 2025 as a test for some users in the United States on iOS and Android. The products appear in a section for shopping brand sites directly, and the buyer confirms the order on an Amazon checkout page.
The agent then opens the website of the brand and fills in the checkout with the encrypted name, address and payment details of the customer. The brand handles delivery, returns and customer service, and the buyer follows the order in a Buy for Me tab of the app. Since March 2026 the feature also reaches merchants that send their catalogs through feed providers.
How the payment works
The buyer pays with the payment method stored in the Amazon account and confirms the order on an Amazon checkout page, as Amazon describes the process. Amazon passes the encrypted card and address data to the website of the brand, so the brand charges the card as with any online order.
Unlike a Shared Payment Token, Buy for Me needs no protocol and no token on the side of the shop. The agent works with the checkout page that the brand built for human buyers, and Amazon is not the seller of the product.
Shop Direct and third-party merchants
In March 2026 Amazon expanded Shop Direct, the section in which these products appear. Feed providers such as Feedonomics, Salsify and CedCommerce now send the catalogs of their merchants to Amazon, and Buy for Me can complete purchases on those websites.
For a brand, the agent purchase arrives as a normal web order paid by card. Amazon states that it sees only the orders placed through Buy for Me and not other purchases of the customer on that website.
Alexa for Shopping
On 13 May 2026 Amazon merged its shopping assistants under the name Alexa for Shopping, which replaced the name Rufus. The assistant can buy a product when its price reaches a target and can reorder products on a schedule.
Buy for Me and Alexa for Shopping are two agents of Amazon that buy for the customer. The first buys outside Amazon, the second inside the store of Amazon.
Amazon and outside agents
Amazon blocks dozens of shopping agents from other companies on its store, the agent of ChatGPT among them, according to GeekWire. In November 2025 Amazon sued Perplexity over its Comet browser agent, and in March 2026 Judge Maxine Chesney granted Amazon an injunction.
On 4 August 2026 the Ninth Circuit vacated that injunction in a narrow ruling written by Judge Milan Smith Jr. With that ruling, the court lifted the block on the Comet agent.
