Dataland
Dataland is a nonprofit initiative developing shared infrastructure for sustainability data. The platform organizes company disclosures into structured environmental, social and governance datasets. Dataland makes the underlying sources traceable so that users can examine the information behind individual indicators.
Dataland serves organizations that need consistent sustainability information across companies and reporting periods. The open-source platform combines data collection with tools for searching, accessing and integrating datasets. Dataland is part of the Werte-Stiftung foundation and receives strategic support from d-fine.
Dataland ESG data
Dataland turns information in company disclosures into reusable data. Users can access information across companies through the same structured format. The sustainability database supports searches by company name and Legal Entity Identifier. Company-level data can be used again across analytical and reporting workflows, with the source remaining available for inspection.
The focus is on disclosed information and its provenance. A dataset has a company, a framework and a reporting period; these distinctions help users keep observations from different years or reporting structures separate. A traceable indicator also gives colleagues a common starting point when they need to check how a figure was reported. The platform therefore brings data sourcing and source documentation into the same workflow.
Platform access and data integration
Dataland offers interactive access and API integration. Users can retrieve datasets through the platform, while internal applications can obtain data programmatically. Downloadable CSV and XLSX files provide another route for teams working with spreadsheets or existing analytical tools.
Integration partners also embed Dataland data in their own products. The integration arrangements include Fact by ACTICO and ISS, a Sopra Steria company. These connections let users work with sustainability information in software that already forms part of their daily process, alongside direct access to Dataland.
Shared sourcing and institutional use
Dataland combines a membership model with shared sourcing of requested datasets. Members use available data and can request information that is not yet in the database. When several members request the same dataset, the sourcing cost is shared. The model separates access to collected information from the work required to obtain new data.
The Dataland community includes banks, asset managers, insurers and other organizations. Reporting, sustainability, risk and data teams can work with the same source-based records. The platform accommodates direct downloads, embedded services and API delivery, so participation does not require every institution to adopt the same internal technology stack.
MEAG and sustainability reporting
MEAG uses Dataland to obtain sustainability indicators that are missing from another provider's datasets and to cross-check data quality. The asset manager of Munich Re and ERGO works with information across a broad portfolio of companies. Dataland supplies an additional source-based reference for those checks.
The work includes information used in SFDR reporting and preparation for changes to EU Taxonomy reporting templates. When data cannot be found in company disclosures, Dataland documents the assessment of whether the information can be sourced. The distinction between an available disclosure and a documented data gap matters for the reporting team's evidence trail.
NORD/LB and automated data delivery
NORD/LB retrieves EU Taxonomy indicators through Dataland for the counterparties needed in its reporting workflows. The bank moved from manual retrieval to API delivery into internal systems. The application combines targeted procurement with automated transfer of the selected datasets. The institution determines the required counterparties and incorporates the selected fields into its reporting process.
This is a different operational use from cross-checking a second provider. Dataland can supply the primary source for a defined set of indicators or complement an existing data service. The choice depends on the institution's reporting process, its company coverage and the information already available within that process.
Dataland in Frankfurt
Dataland GmbH is based in Frankfurt am Main. The initiative connects software development, sustainability expertise and the data requirements of financial institutions. Dataland works on shared data infrastructure for European markets and organizations with different reporting requirements.
The Frankfurt financial center brings together data providers, banks and investment institutions. Frankfurt Main Finance is listed in the Dataland community. The Frankfurt Financial Center Charter provides wider context for cooperation between organizations in the region.
Dataland and Finance Loop
Sustainability data depends on software interfaces, data provenance and cooperation between the people who collect and use information. These questions connect Dataland with the wider discussion of financial infrastructure.
Finance Loop connects professionals working on Digital Assets & Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Technologies, and Digital Infrastructure & Sovereignty. The network supports practical exchange between finance, technology and research.
