Giesecke+Devrient: banknotes, cards and the digital euro

Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) is a Munich security technology company. It prints banknotes, supplies banks with card and wallet technology and builds software for central bank digital currencies. For the European Central Bank it works with Nexi and Capgemini on the offline function of the digital euro.

Banknotes and digital security

Giesecke+Devrient GmbH is the parent of the G+D Group, a SecurityTech company based in Munich. It was founded in Leipzig on June 1, 1852, re-established in Munich in 1948, and has subsidiaries in 40 countries; it is private, family-run and not listed (G+D). Its segments are Digital Security, Financial Platforms and Currency Technology. G+D says more than 700 commercial banks use its payment technology and 145 central banks work with it (G+D).

The digital euro offline

In 2025 the ECB concluded a framework agreement with G+D and its partners Nexi and Capgemini for the offline function of the digital euro (G+D). With G+D Filia Unplugged, a user loads digital money tokens onto a smart card, a SIM card or a secure element in the phone and pays device to device, even when payer and payee are both offline. G+D says the product also works with retail CBDC, banks' tokenized deposit systems and instant payment systems (G+D). Digital euro offline covers the ECB's plans for that mode.

Retail CBDC and bank payments

G+D Filia is the company's own retail CBDC system. G+D built it because it found no existing technology that met the core requirements of a retail CBDC, among them payments without internet or power (G+D). For commercial banks, the Financial Platforms segment covers digital payments and wallets, authentication and digital commerce. In fiscal 2025 G+D agreed to buy the Payments & Banking Services business of Bank-Verlag GmbH; the deal closed in the first quarter of 2026 (G+D). CBDC in Europe compares the central bank projects.

Where is Giesecke+Devrient based?

In Munich. The company started in Leipzig, which has been a G+D production site again since 1991.
