RMA Risk Management & Rating Association
The RMA Risk Management & Rating Association is the independent association for risk management, rating and crisis management in German-speaking Europe and has its seat in Munich. The association was founded in 2005 as the Risk Management Association and merged with BdRA, a Berlin association of rating analysts, at the start of 2020.
The members of the RMA are international groups, midsize companies and individuals from business, academia and the public sector, from enterprise risk managers and auditors to consultants and software vendors. The RMA develops methods of risk management and rating in its working groups, trains risk managers and holds the annual Risk Management Congress.
Membership and fees
The RMA reported 555 members to the lobby register of the German Bundestag in May 2026. A personal membership costs 180 euros a year including the member journal Controller Magazin, or 145 euros without it, and members up to 30 or from 65 pay a reduced fee. Company fees depend on revenue: firms with up to one billion euros pay from 180 euros for one named person, larger firms pay a flat 3,000 euros, and sponsoring members pay 5,000 euros, all plus VAT.
Members can join the working groups, get discounts on seminars and congresses and bring their concerns into the policy work of the association. A member area holds the minutes of the working groups, conference documents, checklists and studies from the archive of the RMA.
Working groups on rating, crises and AI
Sixteen working groups develop the methods of the association, from risk quantification and risk management standards to supply chain risk management and risk management in the energy industry. The group on information risk management runs together with the ISACA Germany Chapter, and the group on internal audit and risk management with the Deutsches Institut für Interne Revision (DIIR). The rating and risk management group continues the former work of BdRA on probabilities of default, benchmarking and sustainability ratings.
The crisis management group wrote a guide to the crisis management standard ISO 22361, which Erich Schmidt Verlag publishes. A working group on artificial intelligence and risk management started in autumn 2024 and studies how classic AI methods and large language models can support AI in risk management work in companies.
Training: CERM and Certified Risk Manager
With the Technical University of Munich, the RMA runs the certificate program Certified Enterprise Risk Manager, which covers risk methods and tools, risk culture, risk reporting, ESG risks and AI. The program takes eleven days in person, split into three modules at TU Munich and a visit to the Risk Management Congress, and it addresses managers and consultants from finance, controlling, audit, risk management and compliance. Distance-learning certificate courses on risk management basics, quantitative risk analysis and rating run with the SRH Fernhochschule.
In 2026 the association introduced the Certified Risk Manager (RMA), a professional certificate for risk managers with at least two years of relevant experience who pass a written exam. Holders renew it every three years with 75 credit points from further training, and RMA membership is a requirement. The subsidiary RMA Rating & Risk Academy, led by Marco Wolfrum, runs seminars and webinars, for example on quantifying risks or on classic and generative AI methods in risk management.
