Sui Blockchain

Sui is a public layer 1 blockchain built by Mysten Labs, a company founded by engineers who had worked on the Diem payment project at Meta. Its mainnet went live on May 3, 2023, and its smart contracts are written in Move, a language that treats digital assets as resources that a program cannot copy or drop by mistake.

Sui stores data as objects with an owner instead of as balances in accounts, so transactions that touch different objects do not wait for each other and can run in parallel. Validators are selected by delegated proof of stake and the validator set can change every 24 hours, while the supply of the SUI token is capped at 10 billion units.

Objects instead of account balances

On Ethereum a token is an entry in the storage of a contract, and a transfer changes two balances inside that contract. On Sui every coin, NFT or position is an object with its own ID, version and owner, and a transaction names the objects it reads and writes. The Sui documentation for Ethereum developers explains how this changes contract design.

An object can belong to one address, or it can be shared, like the pool of an exchange that many users trade against at the same time. Transfers between owners touch only owned objects and need less coordination among validators than trades against a shared pool, which have to be put in order first.

Move smart contracts

Move started at Meta for the Diem project, and Sui uses its own dialect of the language. A Move module defines types with abilities that say whether a value may be copied, dropped or stored, so a coin type without the copy ability cannot be duplicated by a bug. Auditors therefore look for a different class of errors than in Solidity contracts on Ethereum, where reentrancy bugs have drained contracts of their funds.

Validators, epochs and the storage fund

SUI holders delegate their tokens to validators, and the stake decides which validators sign blocks and how much each one earns in the next epoch, which lasts about 24 hours. Gas fees and a subsidy from the token supply pay the validators, and delegators receive a share of these rewards in proportion to their stake, as with other forms of crypto staking.

Data on Sui costs a storage fee that the user pays once when an object is created. The fee goes into a storage fund that pays future validators for keeping the data, and a user who deletes an object gets most of the fee back. The tokenomics documentation describes the fund and the gas price that validators set together each epoch.

Exchange-traded notes in Europe

VanEck listed the VanEck Sui ETN on Euronext Amsterdam and Euronext Paris in November 2024. According to CryptoSlate, the note is fully backed by SUI tokens held with Bank Frick in Liechtenstein, tracks the MarketVector Sui Network VWAP Close Index and has a total expense ratio of 1.5%.

With such a note a fund or a private bank can hold SUI in an ordinary securities account, without a wallet and without its own custody setup. The collateral and the issuer risk of a note differ from those of a fund, a distinction that applies to all crypto ETPs.

Wallets, cards and stablecoins

In September 2025 the payment company xMoney raised 21.5 million dollars in a strategic round led by the Sui Foundation, and MultiversX took part. The Sui Foundation reported that the xPortal wallet with its 2.5 million users added Sui and, through xMoney, a virtual Mastercard that spends assets held in the wallet.

In December 2025 xMoney announced three stablecoins on Sui, for the euro, the dollar and the Romanian leu, which it says comply with MiCA. For banks and payment firms the question is the same as on every chain: who issues the token, who holds the reserves and which license covers the service.

Upcoming blockchain and digital asset events in Germany

What is the Sui blockchain?

The Sui blockchain is a layer 1 network with its own validators and its own token, SUI, which pays for gas, storage and staking. It runs smart contracts written in Move and stores assets as objects, which lets transactions on unrelated objects run in parallel.

Is Sui a blockchain platform?

Sui is a blockchain platform of its own, a layer 1 network with its own consensus and validators that does not run on another chain. Mysten Labs developed it, and its founders Evan Cheng, Sam Blackshear, Adeniyi Abiodun, George Danezis and Kostas Chalkias had worked on Diem and the Move language at Meta. The Sui Foundation supports the ecosystem with grants and events, for example Sui Connect Paris, which the agency Hash Consulting supported for the French market.

Block explorer and network status

A block explorer shows every transaction, object and validator of the network, and for Sui it also shows the owner and the version history of each object. Developers use it to follow a transaction through the objects it changed, and analysts use it to read the stake of each validator in the current epoch.

Staking with validators

A holder who stakes SUI chooses a validator and keeps ownership of the tokens, and the stake starts to earn rewards from the epoch after it was delegated. Institutions that do not run their own validators stake through regulated providers, and institutional staking raises its own questions about custody, accounting and tax.

Building and testing applications

Developers write Move packages with the Sui command line tool, test them on a local network and on the public testnet, and then publish them as immutable or upgradeable packages on mainnet. A team that moves from Ethereum has to redesign its contracts around objects, because a global mapping of balances does not exist in the Sui model.

Sui and Finance Loop

Finance Loop covers public blockchains such as Sui in the Investment & Digital Assets track, because asset managers in Europe now offer exchange-traded notes on their tokens. Finance Loop brings people from banks, asset managers and fintechs together with web3 developers at its web3 meetups in Frankfurt, among them the Digital Assets Night at TechQuartier.

Finance Loop is a professional network and has the goal of driving the institutional use of emerging technologies in finance, such as AI, tokenization, stablecoins, and DeFi. Finance Loop helps its members build skills and personal networks in these fields: Investment & Digital Assets, Payments & Digital Money, Digital Infrastructure & Sovereignty, and Risk & Compliance.
