Bitvavo

Bitvavo is a Dutch crypto exchange where individuals and institutions can buy, sell and hold digital assets. The platform combines euro account funding with an app, an advanced trading interface and API access. An API lets other applications exchange data with the platform and submit trading orders through their own systems.

Customers use Bitvavo to reach crypto markets through an account-based trading and custody service. More experienced traders and institutions can connect their own systems and manage orders through the exchange. Trading and custody remain exposed to market and operational risks, even when the service is provided under a regulatory authorization.

What the MiCA license covers

The AFM granted Bitvavo its license under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation. Bitvavo says the license lets it offer its services across all EU member states, as well as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, under a single harmonized framework, as The Block quotes its announcement. Before MiCA, Bitvavo held national registrations in France, Austria, Italy and Spain next to the Netherlands. Cointelegraph placed the license in a series of MiCA approvals for exchanges, with Kraken licensed in Ireland, Coinbase in Luxembourg and Bybit in Austria. CASP license explains what such an authorization covers.

Euro trading and stablecoins

The market data firm Kaiko counts trades in euro pairs such as BTC/EUR across all exchanges, and by its count Bitvavo handles 44 percent of global EUR spot volume, as crypto hubs in Europe reports. The largest euro crypto exchanges puts the number of euro trading pairs at Bitvavo at more than 440. On the payments side, Bitvavo offers MiCA-compliant USDC, and it lists the euro and dollar stablecoins EURCV and USDCV from Societe Generale-FORGE, as SG-FORGE notes. The German custodian Tangany names Bitvavo among its clients.

Bitvavo and Germany

Bitvavo stopped its service for German customers after it withdrew its application for a BaFin crypto custody license, and said it would rely on MiCA, BTC-ECHO reported. The MiCA license from the AFM covers Germany as an EU member state, so a return no longer depends on a separate German license. Crypto in Europe explains how the MiCA passport works between member states.
