Blockchain Stuttgart

Blockchain in Stuttgart connects shared digital ledgers with the city's exchange, financial institutions and industrial companies. A blockchain records transactions across a network and can support the transfer of digital assets. For banks and corporate treasury teams, the practical questions concern trading, custody and how a payment reaches its recipient.

Boerse Stuttgart Digital supplies financial institutions with infrastructure for digital asset trading and custody. BSDEX provides a crypto trading venue within the exchange group's digital business. Together with the region's banks and industrial customers, these businesses make Stuttgart a place to examine how blockchain services fit existing financial operations.

Licensed crypto custody

Boerse Stuttgart Digital Custody GmbH, formerly blocknox GmbH, holds a BaFin MiCAR authorization for crypto custody. Boerse Stuttgart Digital Custody's custody arrangements include hot, warm and cold wallets. Crypto-assets are not covered by the deposit protection that applies to eligible bank deposits.

Financial institutions can integrate custody and trading into their own offerings. BSDEX provides REST and FIX interfaces for trading. Product teams still need to establish which regulated entity provides each service and how responsibilities are divided. The relevant framework is covered under CASP authorization and MiCA in Germany.

Why the exchange went this direction

Boerse Stuttgart has been Germany's largest exchange for private investors for decades, which gave it an unusual starting position. A venue whose business is retail order flow already knows how to run a regulated order book for people who are not professionals, and extending that to crypto was a smaller step for Stuttgart than for a venue serving institutions only.

Boerse Stuttgart developed a range of services: a trading venue in BSDEX, custody through the licensed entity, brokerage for institutions, and settlement infrastructure for tokenized securities. Each piece is separately licensed and the pieces fit together, which is the thing a bank is buying. Trading, custody and brokerage are services provided by Boerse Stuttgart Digital.

The Mittelstand is the local demand side

Manufacturers in Baden-Württemberg work with international suppliers and customers. Their treasury teams manage foreign currency balances, payment timing and working capital. Those requirements provide concrete tests for a new payment or settlement instrument: its cost, availability, liquidity and acceptance by counterparties.

A stablecoin or tokenized deposit has to fit those processes before it can replace an existing payment route. Corporate treasury and stablecoin payments cover the operational questions. Stuttgart-based LBBW is one of the banks active in digital asset services.

Stuttgart Financial and the cluster

Stuttgart Financial is the financial-center initiative founded in 2007 by the Baden-Württemberg exchange association, the state economics ministry and the banking foundation of the University of Hohenheim. Stuttgart Financial connects companies with research and runs finance and venture events.

What a Stuttgart firm does about MiCA

The same thing a firm anywhere in Germany does: it applies to BaFin, and the authorization passports across the EU. There is no state-level financial supervision in Germany, so Baden-Württemberg offers no regime of its own and a Stuttgart address carries no regulatory advantage over a Frankfurt one.

Where location does matter is in the transition. Firms that held German crypto custody or crypto securities registry authorizations under national law had to move onto MiCA's categories, and a group holding several national licenses had more mapping to do than a new applicant. Finance Loop covers the German route at MiCA in Germany and the authorization at the CASP license.

Startup contacts and financial-sector events

Stuttgart Financial supports finance startups through its Finance Accelerator and connects financial institutions with technology companies. The network and event formats of Stuttgart Financial provide local contacts for founders and established providers.

Finance Loop also connects digital asset professionals at events in Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin and Hamburg. Stuttgart teams can use those meetings to compare custody, payments and treasury applications with colleagues from other financial centers.

Why is Boerse Stuttgart active in crypto?

Boerse Stuttgart has been Germany's largest exchange for private investors for decades, so running a regulated order book for non-professional traders was already its core competence. Extending that to crypto was a smaller step for Stuttgart than for a venue serving only institutions, and the group built out from trading into custody, brokerage and settlement for tokenized securities. Each piece carries its own authorization, which is what an institutional client is paying for.

Who holds the crypto custody license in the Stuttgart group?

Boerse Stuttgart Digital Custody GmbH, formerly blocknox GmbH, holds the BaFin MiCAR authorization for crypto custody in the group. The licensed legal entity matters when an institution checks the contract and supervisory status of its service provider.

Is Stuttgart a financial center?

Stuttgart is home to LBBW, the exchange group and insurance companies including Allianz Lebensversicherung and SV SparkassenVersicherung. Stuttgart Financial coordinates the financial-center initiative and offers contacts, events and education.

Does a Stuttgart firm need a different license than a Frankfurt firm?

Financial supervision in Germany is federal, so BaFin authorizes a firm wherever in the country it sits, and the MiCA authorization that follows passports across the EU. Baden-Württemberg has no financial regime of its own, and a Stuttgart address carries no regulatory advantage or disadvantage. What differs between the cities is the counterparties available, not the rules.

Blockchain in Stuttgart and Finance Loop

Finance Loop brings the Stuttgart infrastructure together with the people who use it: the banks placing client assets with a licensed custodian, the asset managers trading through institutional brokerage, and the Mittelstand treasurers asking their house bank about settlement on a ledger. Finance Loop is the meeting place for the Investment & Digital Assets track in Frankfurt, two hours from Stuttgart, where the providers and their clients meet. Finance Loop members get the operating detail from the firms that hold the licenses.

Finance Loop is a professional network supporting the institutional use of emerging technologies in finance, such as AI, tokenization, stablecoins, and DeFi. Finance Loop helps its members build skills and personal networks in these fields: Investment & Digital Assets, Payments & Digital Money, Digital Infrastructure & Sovereignty, and Risk & Compliance.
