ChatGPT Instant Checkout
Instant Checkout is the purchase inside ChatGPT that OpenAI launched on 29 September 2025. Users in the United States on the Free, Plus and Pro plans could buy single items from Etsy sellers in the chat, and OpenAI announced Shopify merchants as the next step. The buyer tapped Buy, confirmed order, shipping and payment, and never left the conversation.
Instant Checkout runs on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, which OpenAI developed with Stripe. On 24 March 2026 OpenAI moved its focus to product discovery and extended the protocol to catalogs, so most purchases now end in the checkout of the merchant. ChatGPT still shows products and links to merchants, without ads among the results.
How a purchase in the chat works
ChatGPT shows products that match a question, and OpenAI states that the results are organic, unsponsored and ranked by relevance. If a product supports Instant Checkout, the user taps Buy and pays with a card on file or another payment option. The merchant handles order, payment and delivery in its existing systems.
Merchants pay a fee on completed purchases, and the service is free for buyers. OpenAI says the fee does not affect the prices that buyers pay and that Instant Checkout products get no preference in the ranking.
Payments with Stripe and PayPal
Stripe processed the payments of Instant Checkout at launch. The merchant receives a Shared Payment Token that is limited to that merchant, a maximum amount and an expiry time, so ChatGPT passes no card number to the shop.
On 28 October 2025 OpenAI and PayPal announced that PayPal would join ChatGPT, adopt the Agentic Commerce Protocol and process payments for its merchants in Instant Checkout.
The change of March 2026
On 24 March 2026 OpenAI extended the protocol to product discovery, so merchants can send their catalogs into ChatGPT and buyers finish the purchase with the merchant. GeekWire reported that OpenAI pulled back after Instant Checkout failed to gain traction.
Google kept the purchase inside its own interface with the Universal Commerce Protocol and added a Universal Cart in October 2026. OpenAI and Google therefore take different routes for the last step of an agentic purchase.

Is Instant Checkout still available in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT still shows products and links to merchants, but since March 2026 most purchases finish in the checkout of the merchant. OpenAI keeps developing the Agentic Commerce Protocol for product discovery.
Which shops used Instant Checkout?
Etsy sellers in the United States were first, and OpenAI named Shopify merchants such as Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx and Vuori as the next group. Walmart announced in October 2025 that its customers would be able to buy in ChatGPT as well.
Did buyers pay a fee for Instant Checkout?
No, the service was free for buyers, and merchants paid a fee on completed purchases. OpenAI stated that the fee did not change the prices shown in the chat.
