PayPal agentic commerce
PayPal agentic commerce services are the offers of PayPal for merchants that want to sell through AI agents. PayPal launched them on 28 October 2025 with two parts: agent ready lets existing PayPal merchants accept payments in AI agents, and store sync brings their product catalogs and order data into those agents. The merchant remains the merchant of record and fulfills the order itself.
On the same day PayPal and OpenAI announced that PayPal would process payments in ChatGPT through the Agentic Commerce Protocol. PayPal also handles checkout in Perplexity and was named as a coming payment option for the checkout in Google AI Mode. Store sync started with Wix, Cymbio, Commerce and the German shop software company Shopware.
Agent ready and store sync
With agent ready, according to the PayPal announcement, PayPal merchants accept payments in AI agents without a new integration. PayPal brings its fraud detection, buyer protection and dispute resolution into these purchases, and the service was planned for early 2026.
Store sync makes the product data and order handling of a merchant available to AI agents. Partners at launch were Wix, Cymbio, Commerce with BigCommerce and Feedonomics, and Shopware, the shop software company from Schöppingen in Germany.
PayPal in ChatGPT
On 28 October 2025 OpenAI and PayPal announced that PayPal would adopt the Agentic Commerce Protocol, bring the catalogs of its merchants into ChatGPT and process their payments in Instant Checkout. Buyers in ChatGPT were to pay with their PayPal accounts.
OpenAI moved its focus to product discovery in March 2026, and most purchases from ChatGPT now finish in the checkout of the merchant. PayPal remains a payment option in that checkout, as in any other web shop.
Google and Perplexity
When Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol in January 2026, Google named PayPal as the next payment option after Google Pay for the checkout in AI Mode and Gemini. The PayPal announcement also names Perplexity, where PayPal processes purchases that shoppers make in the answers.
PayPal therefore connects its merchants to three AI agents that use different protocols. With store sync, PayPal takes over the connection to these agents, including ACP, for the merchant.
