CoinMarketCap

CoinMarketCap is a price tracking website for crypto assets that ranks coins and tokens by market capitalization and lists their prices, trading volumes and supply. It started in 2013 and counted more than 340 million visits a month in June 2022. Forbes, Bloomberg and CNBC cite its data in their reporting on crypto markets.

Binance announced on 2 April 2020 that it had acquired CoinMarketCap, and both companies said that CoinMarketCap would keep running as a separate business. Brandon Chez, who founded the site, stepped down as chief executive at that time and stayed on as an adviser.

CoinMarketCap API

The CoinMarketCap API delivers prices, market data and historical data for crypto assets and exchanges. A free basic plan has a monthly call limit, and paid plans add history and commercial use. Developers pull the data into Excel, Google Sheets or Python scripts with a personal API key.

DexScan and onchain data

DexScan shows prices, liquidity and trades of tokens on decentralized exchanges, beside the listings from centralized exchanges. CoinMarketCap also runs portfolio and watchlist tools, the learning portal CMC Academy and AI summaries of market news.

How reliable is the data?

CoinMarketCap calculates prices as volume-weighted averages across the exchanges it lists and publishes its methodology. In May 2019 it formed the DATA Alliance with exchanges and data firms to push for transparent volume reporting. The figures suit private investors and apps, while an audited fund valuation needs a regulated reference rate from one of the crypto price feed providers.

Who owns the site?

Binance owns CoinMarketCap since the acquisition announced on 2 April 2020, and the site runs as a separate business from the exchange.

Is the API free?

The basic plan of the CoinMarketCap API is free with a monthly call limit, while history and commercial use need a paid plan.

How does it differ from CoinGecko?

Both sites rank crypto assets by market capitalization and offer free APIs to developers. CoinGecko is independent, while CoinMarketCap belongs to Binance.
