Verband Deutscher Treasurer

The Verband Deutscher Treasurer (VDT) is the professional association for corporate treasury in Germany and was founded in 1997 under the motto "from treasurers for treasurers". Its members are finance managers from almost 900 companies, from large groups and midsize firms to banks, consultancies, software vendors, audit firms and law firms.

The VDT gives its more than 2,000 members a place to share practical experience on cash management, financing, currency and credit risk, and the investment of company assets. The association runs conferences, online events, regional meetings and workshops, publishes guides and position papers, and trains treasury staff from a basic course up to a postgraduate certificate.

Membership and members

Membership in the Verband Deutscher Treasurer is open to companies, to individual treasurers and to service providers, who join as sponsoring members. The association counts 2,138 members, and its events have drawn 27,954 participants across 386 events so far. Members get preferential prices for the training programs and a voice in surveys and consultations, which the VDT carries into regulatory and political debates.

Sponsoring members are banks, consultancies, law firms, rating agencies, financial service providers and treasury system vendors. Among them are Deutsche Bank, the audit firms BDO and Deloitte, and the FX trading platform 360T of Deutsche Börse Group. Sponsoring members also write the articles in the Treasury Bulletin, the digital journal that the association publishes twice a year for its members.

Expert departments and publications

Corporate treasurers discussing real-time liquidity movements on a large wall dashboard

The technical work of the VDT happens in five expert departments: Asset Management, Professional Profile & Qualification, Cash & Liquidity, Equity & Debt, and Risk Management. Each department is led by a member of the presidium, and members of the association can join a department and help write its guides and best-practice notes. A Digital Innovation Board looks at how digitalization changes the systems, processes and role of the treasury function.

In 2026 the Cash & Liquidity department published a guide on structured addresses in payments, which explains what the address fields of the ISO 20022 migration mean for company master data. Together with the International Trade and Forfaiting Association, the VDT surveyed more than 50 market participants on digital trade bills for trade finance in Germany.

Training from basic course to Certified Corporate Treasurer

The VDT Basisqualifizierung Treasury is the entry course and covers the basic functions of a treasury department, with content put together by practitioners from the qualification department. For experienced staff, the postgraduate program Certified Corporate Treasurer VDT runs together with the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management, whose professors wrote the curriculum with senior treasurers. Specialists can add Certified Expert Treasurer seminars on single treasury topics.

Young professionals can join a free mentoring program, in which experienced treasurers share their knowledge with colleagues from other companies. Bachelor students in business programs learn the core functions of corporate treasury in the one-week VDT Summerschool Treasury, an ECTS-certified course held with the Frankfurt School since 2020. With the Study@VDT Treasury Days, the association also brings lectures on cash management, currency management and financing to universities.

Upcoming fintech and finance events in Germany

VDT Treasury Day and regional meetings

The VDT Treasury Day is the annual conference of the association in Frankfurt and includes the general meeting of members. The program covers geopolitics, European regulation and the economic outlook for treasurers, with time for conversations between treasury heads and finance experts. The expert departments add their own conferences during the year, such as the asset management conference in the Opernturm in Frankfurt with about 90 participants.

Fifteen regional circles meet from Hamburg and Berlin to Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Munich, and the eastern circle meets online. Members can register for up to three regions, and non-members can ask the office for a guest place. Online events cover practical topics such as verification of payee, virtual accounts and financial covenants in loan agreements.

Presidium and executive board

The general meeting of members elects the presidium, which sets the strategy of the VDT and represents it on technical and policy matters. Regina Deisemann of Vorwerk has been spokesperson of the presidium since November 2025, and Prof. Dr. Franziska Kahla of the BSP Business & Law School in Hamburg has been her deputy since February 2026. Carsten Linker of the Pfleiderer Group, Andreas Sowa of PERI and Gregor Stephan of Mercer lead the departments for risk management, equity and debt, and asset management.

The executive board runs the operations of the association and advises the presidium on its strategy. Tim Staudt has been the managing member of the board since October 2022 and heads the office, while Prof. Dr. Christian Debus and Fabio Bär are honorary members of the board.

Partnerships in Germany and Europe

The VDT was one of seven national associations that founded the European Association of Corporate Treasurers in 2002, which today brings together about 14,000 treasury professionals from 25 national associations. Since March 2017 the VDT has been a member of the payments forum of the Deutsche Bundesbank, where providers and users of payment services meet. The association has also been a courtesy member of the Loan Market Association in London since 2014.

The Frankfurt School of Finance & Management is the education partner of the VDT for the Certified Corporate Treasurer and the summer school. A cooperation with the GVNW, the German association of corporate insurance buyers, gives members advice on the insurance cover of their companies.
