Alastria

Alastria is a Spanish non-profit association that describes itself as one of the largest public-permissioned blockchain platforms in the world, open to companies, universities and public administrations. About 70 companies and institutions from banking, energy, telecommunications and the legal profession founded it in October 2017, and today more than 500 organizations are members.

Alastria wants to make blockchain technology accessible to every organization, support new business models of the digital economy and promote knowledge of blockchain through real use cases. Members can deploy nodes on the blockchain networks of the association, use its open source model for digital identity and work in committees and sector groups, from financial services to health.

Members, fees and sector groups

More than 500 organizations belong to Alastria, among them banks, energy and telecom companies, universities, business schools and public bodies. The annual membership fee depends on company size, from 500 for a small company and 5,000 for a medium-sized one to 10,000 for a large company, and public entities join through a collaboration agreement.

Members work in seven sector groups, among them financial services, real estate, energy and industry, and health and pharma. Commissions and committees deal with digital identity, legal questions, standardization, resilience, research and ESG, and a technology strategy committee steers the networks.

President and board

The general assembly of all members is the highest body of Alastria, and a board of directors carries out its decisions and oversees the commissions. Miguel Ángel Domínguez of ADD4U chairs the board, with María Concepción de Monteverde of Banco Santander and Luis Pastor of Tritemius as vice presidents and Francisco Maroto of BBVA as treasurer. Further board members come from Repsol, Telefónica, Fujitsu, Inetum, Izertis, Metrovacesa and the Universidad Pontificia Comillas.

At the launch in 2017, Julio Faura was president of Alastria and Alex Puig was its chief executive officer. The association is registered as Asociación Consorcio Red Alastria, with its address at Calle Alberto Aguilera 23 in 28015 Madrid, on the ICADE campus of the Universidad Pontificia Comillas.

Blockchain networks: Red T, Red B and Red H

In 2021 Alastria ran three permissioned networks on different technologies: Red T on Quorum, Red B on Hyperledger Besu and Red H on Hyperledger Fabric. That year Telefónica Tech, a founding member of Alastria, agreed to install and operate a Hyperledger Fabric network for members, with a free shared platform for proofs of concept and a paid platform with guaranteed service levels.

Members get access to blockchain networks run by partners with predictable gas costs, and Alastria helps new members with the first steps of deploying their own nodes. Proofs of concept on these networks are part of the membership offer for companies that want to test blockchain before a project.

Alastria ID and digital identity

Digital-identity specialists testing a decentralized credential verification flow on two mobile devices

Digital identity was the first focus of Alastria: at the launch the consortium named an identity standard, ID Alastria, as its first project. Its identity commission defines and builds the open source model of digital identity, and members can use these open source resources in their own applications.

In the European Union, the same questions now come up around the EUDI wallet under the eIDAS 2 regulation. Large regulated companies, banks among them, will have to accept the wallet when customers identify themselves online.

ISBE, the blockchain infrastructure of Spain

ISBE, the Blockchain Services Infrastructure of Spain, is a project of the Community of Madrid that Alastria carries out. It aims to deploy the first national, public and interoperable blockchain network in Spain, built on Hyperledger Besu and designed to work with the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI). The project is funded by NextGenerationEU, the EU recovery plan, and its use cases include digital identity, traceability, process automation and the measurement of carbon footprints.

Alastria leads the design, deployment and technical governance of ISBE, and it supports the users of the network with technical help, training and communication. The execution period of the project ran from February to December 2025.

Alastria Blockchain Awards

The Alastria Blockchain Awards honor blockchain and DLT projects with an impact on digital transformation, business innovation and society. Four categories are for projects in decentralized digital identity, tokenization and digital assets, industrial uses and sustainability. Two further categories honor journalistic or educational work on blockchain and the most influential woman in blockchain.

Companies of any size, foundations, non-profit organizations and public administrations can apply with up to two projects each. Journalists, communicators and professionals from the sector can each submit one work of their own in the journalism category.

European projects and partnerships

Alastria is a member of the European Blockchain Partnership, the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure and INATBA, and in Latin America of LACChain. It also takes part in standardization at UNE, CEN/CENELEC, ISO and ITU, and it has worked on the EU research projects Trublo and Blockchers under Horizon 2020. In its podcast Blockchain Bites, Alastria spoke with Miguel Ángel Calero Fernández, executive director of the European Blockchain Convention in Barcelona.

Alastria and Finance Loop

Finance Loop was an official media partner of the European Blockchain Convention 2026 in Barcelona, the conference whose executive director Alastria interviewed in its podcast. Finance Loop members at banks in Spain and Germany ask the questions that Alastria works on with its members, about digital identity, tokenized securities and the rules of MiCA.

Finance Loop is a professional network and has the goal of driving the institutional use of emerging technologies in finance, such as AI, tokenization, stablecoins, and DeFi. Finance Loop helps its members build skills and personal networks in these fields: Investment & Digital Assets, Payments & Digital Money, Digital Infrastructure & Sovereignty, and Risk & Compliance.
