Blockchain.com
Blockchain.com is a crypto company that began its work in 2011 with what it calls the first Bitcoin block explorer and a wallet, and it reports more than 95 million wallets created. Today it runs a brokerage app for buying, selling and swapping crypto-assets, a self-custody DeFi Wallet and services for institutions.
Peter Smith is co-founder, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman of the company, which is based in Dallas. In the European Economic Area, Blockchain.com Operations (Malta) Limited holds a MiCA authorization from the Malta Financial Services Authority MFSA.
Authorization by the MFSA under MiCA
The interim MiCA register of ESMA lists Blockchain.com Operations (Malta) Limited at 171 Old Bakery Street in Valletta, with an authorization of 22 October 2025. The Malta Financial Services Authority is the competent authority, and Blockchain.com announced the license on the following day.
The register lists passports for all 29 other countries of the European Economic Area, so the company can serve customers in every other EU member state as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. A spokesperson told Cointelegraph that the license brings the services across the EEA under one regulatory framework.
Five services in the authorization
The authorization covers custody of crypto-assets for clients, the exchange of crypto-assets for funds and for other crypto-assets, the execution of orders and transfer services. These five services match the brokerage app, in which customers buy, sell, swap and send crypto-assets that Blockchain.com holds for them.
The register lists no operation of a trading platform and no advice or portfolio management for the Maltese company. A CASP license names each authorized service separately, and the MFSA would have to extend the authorization for any further service.
From the first explorer to a brokerage
Blockchain.com built the original Blockchain Explorer, a search engine for Bitcoin transactions, and an API that developers used to read on-chain data. Its wallet then became, by the account of the company, the most widely used crypto wallet in the world.
The company today names more than 1.2 trillion dollars in volume moved through its platform and more than 20 products. Next to the brokerage and the wallet, the product list includes premium investing, crypto-backed loans and an Earn program for crypto rewards.

Blockchain.com Explorer
The Blockchain.com Explorer shows blocks, transactions and addresses on Bitcoin and other blockchains without an account. The company calls it the first Bitcoin explorer, and developers can query the same data through free APIs.
Blockchain.com Wallet
The DeFi Wallet of Blockchain.com is a self-custody wallet, in which users hold their own private keys under the slogan Be Your Own Bank. MiCA regulates the custodial accounts of the brokerage app, while software for unhosted wallets, in which no provider holds the keys, falls outside the regulation.
Blockchain.com in Malta
Fiorentina D'Amore became Senior Director of EU Business Operations and Chief Executive Officer of the Maltese company in October 2025. She chaired the Financial Institutions Malta Association before, a group of licensed institutions that also represents several crypto firms in Malta.
Blockchain.com in Europe
Blockchain.com can serve customers in 29 other EEA countries through the European passport of the Maltese company. Germany is on the list, so the company needs no separate license from the BaFin for its five authorized services.
Blockchain.com IPO
Blockchain.com announced on 21 May 2026 that it had confidentially submitted a draft registration statement on Form S-1 to the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The number of shares and the price range were not set at the time of the announcement.
