Safello

Safello is a Swedish crypto exchange that has bought and sold crypto assets for private customers since its founding in Stockholm in 2013. Customers open an account with Mobile BankID, pay with Swish, bank transfer or card, and keep bitcoin and other crypto assets in the Safello wallet or send them to a wallet of their own.

Safello reports more than 425,000 customers in the Nordics, and its parent company is listed on Nasdaq First North Growth Market under the ticker SFL. In October 2025 the Swedish supervisor Finansinspektionen authorized Safello AB as a crypto-asset service provider under MiCA, and Safello also builds crypto services for banks and businesses.

From a Stockholm startup to a listed exchange

Safello started in 2013 and registered with Finansinspektionen as a financial institution in the same year. Swish payments and BankID logins followed in 2018, and the listing on Nasdaq First North Growth Market came in 2021 together with the Safello wallet.

In the following years Safello added more crypto assets, card payments with Apple Pay and Google Pay, swaps between crypto assets, an order book and stop-loss and take-profit orders. Auto-Save lets customers buy crypto assets on a fixed schedule at a lower fee than single purchases.

Authorization under MiCA

Finansinspektionen authorized Safello AB on 13 October 2025 as a crypto-asset service provider under Article 63 of MiCA. The authorization covers custody and administration of crypto assets, exchange of crypto assets for money and for other crypto assets, execution of orders, reception and transmission of orders, and transfer services for clients.

The interim MiCA register of ESMA lists the entry with Sweden as home member state and without passport countries. With a CASP license from one member state, a provider can serve clients in the other EEA states after the supervisor has passed on its notification.

Crypto services for banks and businesses

Besides its app for private investors, Safello offers tailored crypto solutions for institutions, banks and businesses, and it launched a crypto-as-a-service offering in 2022. A bank can use such a service to let its own customers buy and hold crypto assets without building custody, trading and compliance on its own.

For banks in the EU this model gains weight under MiCA, because the partner that holds the crypto assets needs an authorization of its own. A bank that offers crypto through Safello relies on the custody and order handling that Finansinspektionen authorized in October 2025.

What is Safello?

Safello is a crypto exchange and broker from Stockholm that serves private customers in Sweden, sells crypto assets in Swedish kronor and holds them in its own custody. Finansinspektionen supervises the company, and since October 2025 Safello AB holds an authorization under MiCA for six crypto-asset services.

Safello AB and the listed group

Safello AB is the operating company that holds the MiCA authorization, while Safello Group AB is the listed parent company whose shares trade under the ticker SFL. The parent company publishes quarterly reports and a financial calendar, and investors buy the share through Swedish brokers on Nasdaq First North Growth Market.

The app with BankID and Swish

The Safello app for iOS and Android opens an account in under a minute with Mobile BankID, the electronic identification that most adults in Sweden use. Deposits arrive by Swish or bank transfer, and since 2024 customers can also receive the proceeds of a sale as a Swish payout.

Buying and selling bitcoin in kronor

Customers buy bitcoin on Safello directly with Swedish kronor, either as a single purchase, through a limit order in the order book or as a recurring Auto-Save plan. The price follows the bitcoin market in kronor, and a sale pays the amount back to the bank account or as a Swish payout.

Wallet and custody of crypto assets

The Safello wallet holds the crypto assets of customers with the MPC technology of Fireblocks, which splits the private key into parts so that no single server holds the whole key. Customers can also send their crypto assets to a wallet of their own, and MiCA requires that the custodian keeps client assets apart from its own.
