Vipps MobilePay
Vipps MobilePay is a Nordic mobile wallet that lets people send money to each other, pay in shops and pay online from one app on their phone. The company formed in 2022 when the Norwegian app Vipps merged with MobilePay, which started in Denmark and later spread to Finland. Vipps MobilePay is registered in Oslo and runs its daily operations from offices in Oslo, Copenhagen, Aarhus and Helsinki.
A user connects a bank card or account to the app and then pays with a phone number, a QR code or a tap of the phone at the till. Shops, clubs and online stores pay Vipps MobilePay a fee for each transaction they receive. In Norway and Sweden the app carries the Vipps name, while users in Denmark and Finland still know it as MobilePay.
From two national apps to one Nordic wallet
MobilePay launched in Denmark in 2013, and Vipps followed in Norway in 2015, where it reached one million users within six months, according to the company history. The two companies merged in 2022 as Vipps MobilePay AS and have since moved their users and merchants onto one shared app and technology platform. Vipps arrived in Sweden in September 2024 with payments between people inside the country and across the Nordic borders.
On 6 October 2026 the company announced that MobilePay will take the Vipps name in Denmark, Finland and Greenland on 12 January 2027. The change brings close to 13 million users under one brand, and Danish and Finnish users keep the blue MobilePay color in their app. Users do not have to take any action, and the functions of the app stay the same.
Payments between people, in shops and online
Both apps began with sending money between people, where a user picks a contact or types a phone number and confirms the amount. Sports clubs, associations and small sellers receive payments through a Vipps number, either with a list of items and prices or with an open amount the customer enters. Larger shops connect the app to their cash register, and since 2025 small merchants can also use mPOS, a point-of-sale system that runs on a phone.
In September 2025 Vipps added international cards in Norway, so users can pay with their phone at card terminals worldwide, and Tap to Pay launches in Denmark, Finland and Sweden followed. By the end of 2025, 1.05 million users had activated tap to pay, according to the annual report for 2025. Online revenue grew fastest in Finland, by 79 percent, ahead of Denmark with 29 percent and Norway with 21 percent.
Online stores add Vipps MobilePay to their checkout through an API or a plugin, and subscriptions run as recurring payments from the app. In March 2026 the company sold its Checkout product to the Swedish company Kustom for about NOK 490 million, a deal that covered around 3,000 online shops. Kustom became a recommended checkout partner and offers its merchants Vipps Login, Express Checkout and recurring payments.
Users, revenue and supervision
At the end of 2025 Vipps MobilePay counted 12.4 million users: 4.74 million in Denmark, 4.68 million in Norway, 2.86 million in Finland and about 160,000 in Sweden. The apps handled 1.438 billion transactions in that year, not counting tap to pay, and 580,000 sales units accepted Vipps MobilePay. The company removed inactive and duplicate profiles from its user count in 2025, so the figures for that year rest on a cleaner user base than those of earlier years.
Revenue rose by NOK 381 million to NOK 2.088 billion in 2025, and the pre-tax loss fell to NOK 135 million from NOK 751 million a year earlier, the company reported in May 2026. The fourth quarter of 2025 was the first quarter in company history with a profit before tax. In Denmark the company introduced Olga, an AI model for fraud detection that builds on systems already used in Norway.
Vipps MobilePay AS is an electronic money institution supervised by Finanstilsynet, the Norwegian Financial Supervisory Authority. Its branches in Denmark and Finland are also supervised by the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority and the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority.
EuroPA and the European Network for Payments
Vipps MobilePay is a member of the European Payments Alliance, which connects national mobile payment apps across Europe. On 30 September 2026 the company announced the European Network for Payments, a joint company with Bancomat from Italy, Bizum from Spain, SIBS with MB WAY from Portugal and the European Payments Initiative, which runs Wero. The network is based in Madrid, each founding partner holds an equal share, and the connected solutions serve about 130 million users in 13 European countries.
The rollout starts with payments between people across borders and adds online and in-store payments in later phases. Each app keeps its own brand and user experience, so a Nordic user can pay or send money abroad with the same app used at home.
