W3MUC
W3MUC is a Munich initiative that connects people working on Web3 in Munich and Bavaria. Web3 applications use blockchains to keep shared records and let users authorize actions with their own cryptographic keys. The initiative brings developers and founders together with interested newcomers to exchange ideas and collaborate on these technologies.
W3MUC introduces subjects such as decentralized finance and the programs called smart contracts that run on blockchains. Participants can learn about applications and discuss work they are developing or considering. Local partners such as WERK1 connect the community with Munich's wider startup environment, helping people find collaborators beyond their own project.
Web3 exhibitions and events in Munich
W3MUC runs events about web3 and other new technologies in Munich. Past formats include an NFT exhibition at the Haus der Kunst, a Web3 Innovation Forum and stages at the Festival der Zukunft. W3MUC also staged FORTITUDE, an event about the space economy. Venues include the Munich Urban Colab.
Dr. Daniel Kliche coordinates W3MUC. He co-founded MUC.xyz in 2022 and W3MUC in 2024. The initiative introduces blockchain applications and decentralized finance through events and workshops open to newcomers as well as professionals.
Blockchain in Munich: the field W3MUC works in
Munich has a blockchain scene of its own, separate from the banking center in Frankfurt. Students at the Technical University of Munich run the TUM Blockchain Club, which by its own account is the biggest student-run blockchain club in Germany and holds the TUM Blockchain Conference every year, a blockchain conference in Munich for students, developers, founders and industry. The events of W3MUC and Finance Loop address finance professionals as well as builders, so fintech in Munich and the web3 scene meet in the same rooms.
The rules are the same in Munich as in the rest of Germany. A company that offers crypto services, such as custody or a trading platform, needs a license under MiCA, and in Germany BaFin grants it under the Kryptomärkteaufsichtsgesetz. Securities issued on a blockchain fall under the German law on electronic securities (eWpG), explained on the page on tokenized securities. W3MUC and Finance Loop
Finance Loop held a Munich launch event on 6 May 2024. Four months later, on 2 September 2024, Finance Loop and W3MUC announced their partnership. The partnership covers workshops, panel discussions and networking sessions, and topics from the basics of blockchain and crypto to DeFi, smart contracts and the effect of web3 on global finance. Both partners describe their Munich events as open to finance professionals and to newcomers.
On 30 September 2024, Finance Loop also agreed a network partnership with DLT Germany, a second initiative for distributed ledger technology in Munich. W3MUC is an event and network partner of Finance Loop.

The Festival der Zukunft is a technology festival in Munich, run by the Deutsches Museum with 1E9. The festival starts with a professional conference and continues with open days at the museum. Topics include AI and robotics as well as medicine and quantum technology. W3MUC participated in the 2023 and 2024 editions.
