eToro

eToro is a multi-asset investment platform founded in 2007, on which customers invest in stocks, ETFs, indices, commodities, currencies and more than 100 crypto-assets. Customers can also copy the portfolios of other investors on the platform or put money into thematic portfolios that eToro manages for them.

eToro reports more than 38 million registered users in 75 countries and calls Europe its largest market. The EU business runs through eToro (Europe) Ltd in Limassol, which the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission CySEC supervises under MiFID II and authorized as a crypto-asset service provider under MiCA.

Authorization by CySEC under MiCA

The interim MiCA register of ESMA lists eToro (Europe) Ltd with an authorization date of 16 January 2025 from the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission. eToro announced the permit on 19 February 2025 and said that it can offer crypto services across the EU once it has notified each member state.

The register lists passports for 29 other countries of the European Economic Area, which covers every other EU member state as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The same company also holds the CySEC investment firm license 109/10 under MiFID II for stocks, ETFs and other financial instruments.

Seven services in the authorization

The authorization covers custody of crypto-assets for clients, the exchange of crypto-assets for funds, the execution of orders and the reception and transmission of orders. It also includes advice on crypto-assets, portfolio management of crypto-assets and transfer services, which together make seven of the ten services in the MiCA regulation.

Advice and portfolio management appear less often in the register than custody and exchange services. Both services match products of eToro: the managed thematic portfolios and the copy function, in which customers follow the trades of other investors.

From the national register to MiCA

Before MiCA, Cyprus kept a national register of crypto-asset service providers, and CySEC approved the registration of an eToro entity in September 2023. MiCA replaced these national regimes, and the MiCA transitional period let registered firms continue while their applications were pending.

eToro achieved a SOC 2 Type II certification for its crypto custody operations, audited by Grant Thornton, which the release of February 2025 mentions next to the permit. Investors who keep coins on the platform rely on that custody, and crypto custody under MiCA requires the provider to keep client assets separate from its own.

Crypto trading on eToro

Customers buy and sell crypto-assets on eToro next to stocks and ETFs in the same account, and eToro executes these orders for them. The MiCA authorization covers the exchange of crypto-assets for funds and the execution of orders, while the register lists no operation of a trading platform for the company.
