SIX Group

SIX is the operator of the financial market infrastructure of Switzerland and Spain, with its headquarters in Zurich. The group runs the stock exchanges SIX Swiss Exchange and BME Exchange, settles and holds securities, processes payments between banks and sells financial information. Around 120 national and international financial institutions own SIX, and these institutions are also its main clients.

SIX covers the chain from a trade on an exchange through clearing and settlement to the final payment between banks. In 2025, SIX had more than 4,300 employees in 19 countries and generated operating income of CHF 1.7 billion. The group is organized in four business units: Exchanges, Securities Services, Financial Information and Banking Services.

Exchanges in Switzerland, Spain and the UK

SIX Swiss Exchange in Zurich is the stock exchange of Switzerland, and SIX publishes its monthly trading and listing figures together with those of BME Exchange in Spain. Bolsas y Mercados Españoles (BME) operates all stock markets and financial systems in Spain, from equities, fixed income and derivatives to clearing, settlement and market data. With the purchase of the UK exchange Aquis in 2025, SIX now runs primary exchange and MTF businesses across 16 markets in Switzerland, the EU and the UK. An MTF, or multilateral trading facility, is a trading venue that brings buyers and sellers together without being a regulated stock exchange.

Payments in Swiss francs and euros

The Swiss Interbank Clearing (SIC) system is the central payment system of Switzerland, and SIX Interbank Clearing Ltd has operated it on behalf of the Swiss National Bank since its launch on June 10, 1987. SIC is a real-time gross settlement system, so each payment between two banks settles on its own, irrevocably and around the clock. On November 17, 2023, SIX and the Swiss National Bank launched SIC5, the platform for instant payments that reach the account of the payee within ten seconds. Since August 20, 2024, more than 100 financial institutions that cover over 95 percent of customer payments in Switzerland can receive such payments.

For euro payments between banks, SIX has run the euroSIC system since 1999, and the Swiss Euro Clearing Bank holds the euro balances of its participants. In March 2025, the board of SIX Interbank Clearing decided to discontinue euroSIC on December 31, 2027. The Banking Services unit of SIX also processes debit cards, runs the eBill service and the Swiss QR-bill standard, and operates the shared Bancomat ATM network.

Financial information and indices

The Financial Information unit of SIX supplies reference, pricing, corporate action, ESG and regulatory data, and its database covers more than 30 million instruments. SIX also calculates the SMI, SLI and SPI, the indices of the Swiss equity market. For digital assets, the crypto asset data of SIX covers more than 85 percent of cryptocurrency market activity worldwide with real-time and historical prices. SIX supplies reference data for reporting under the EU regulation MiCA and under the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework of the OECD, and it calculates crypto indices such as the CMI 10.

Digital assets beyond SDX

SIX built its first business with digital securities in SIX Digital Exchange (SDX), a separately licensed digital central securities depository. In May 2026, FINMA approved the plan of SIX to merge SIX Digital Exchange AG into SIX SIS AG, the Swiss central securities depository of SIX, which brings digital and traditional securities into one legal entity. The same approval allows SIX to hold crypto assets in custody through that depository, an access model that SIX calls "one plug to two worlds".

The crypto custody service of SIX keeps all private keys in Switzerland under the direct control of SIX and supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and other major cryptocurrencies and stablecoins. SIX also offers custodial staking for institutional clients, and together with RULEMATCH it provides trading, settlement and custody of crypto assets as one service. SIX designs the target architecture of its Digital Asset Platform to work with any asset and any ledger, so that tokenized and traditional securities use the same services for custody, settlement and corporate actions.
