Swiss Financial Center

The Swiss financial center is the banking, wealth management, insurance and asset management industry of Switzerland. Zurich and Geneva are its largest centers, with Basel, Lugano and Zug next to them. Its best-known business is managing the wealth of clients from other countries, and the Swiss Bankers Association calls Switzerland the leading hub for cross-border wealth management.

Banks in Switzerland held CHF 9,729 billion in client assets at the end of 2025, and the figure passed CHF 10,000 billion in the first half of 2026. The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA supervises banks, insurers, fund firms and crypto firms, and the Swiss National Bank sets monetary policy for the franc.

Banks, insurers and the economy in figures

The key figures of the State Secretariat for International Finance count 230 banks at the end of 2024: 24 cantonal banks, 58 regional and savings banks, 85 foreign banks, one big bank and the Raiffeisen group among them, with a combined balance sheet of CHF 3,219 billion. The financial sector produced CHF 74.0 billion in value added in 2024, 9.0 percent of GDP, and paid 13.0 percent of all taxes. It employed 222,800 people in full-time equivalents in 2025, 5.1 percent of all jobs, and 195 insurers were active in the country.

The banks' aggregate net income rose 5.8 percent to CHF 73.8 billion in 2025, according to the Swiss Bankers Association. Swiss fund assets grew about 10 percent to CHF 1.74 trillion, the figure of the Asset Management Association Switzerland.

One big bank since 2023

Switzerland had two big banks until 2023, when UBS took over Credit Suisse. Since then UBS has been the only bank in the SNB's big bank category, and four Swiss banks count as systemically important. The SBA says future banking regulation has to strengthen stability while keeping the financial center competitive, and in its survey 93 percent of bank economists rate the growing density of regulation as an important risk.

Digital assets, tokenization and fintech

Switzerland has had a law for securities on distributed ledgers since 2021, and FINMA grants fintech licenses and licenses for DLT trading facilities. Several Swiss crypto banks hold full banking licenses. Zug is the center of the Crypto Valley, and Lugano accepts bitcoin and USDT for all city taxes under its Plan â‚¿ with Tether.

Banks and fintech firms in Zurich work on common interfaces for open banking in Switzerland. The SBA's survey of chief economists names the digital customer experience as the greatest opportunity for Swiss banks, and 86 percent of those asked consider a successful approach to AI vital for international competitiveness.
