PostFinance

PostFinance is a Swiss bank in Bern and a wholly owned subsidiary of Swiss Post. About 2.4 million private and business customers use its accounts, cards, payment services and investment products, most of them through the e-finance online banking or the PostFinance App. Postal legislation requires PostFinance to provide the universal service for payment transactions throughout Switzerland.

PostFinance goes back to the postal check and giro service, whose first account opened in Basel in 1906. Since 2013 the company has held a license as a bank and securities firm under the supervision of FINMA, and since 2015 it has been one of the four systemically important banks of Switzerland. Postal law does not allow PostFinance to grant loans or mortgages to third parties on its own account.

Payment transactions and instant payments

PostFinance is the leading provider of payment transactions in Switzerland and processed almost 1.5 billion payment transactions at home and abroad in 2025. At the end of June 2026, customers held CHF 117.5 billion with PostFinance, of which CHF 92.2 billion sat in accounts, while invested assets reached CHF 25.3 billion.

Since August 2024, all PostFinance customers have been able to receive instant payments, which are transfers in Swiss francs that arrive within seconds at any hour. Business customers can receive up to CHF 20,000 per instant payment, with the same value date on every day of the year. Cash payments at post office counters also belong to the universal service, and PostFinance expects this part of its business to keep losing money, CHF 65 million in the first half of 2026.

PostFinance Checkout for online shops

PostFinance Checkout is the payment solution of PostFinance for online shops and comes in three variants. Checkout All-in-One is the starter package for shops with an annual turnover of up to CHF 200,000 and costs CHF 14.90 a month plus 2.5 percent per transaction. Shops accept the PostFinance Pay wallet and TWINT as well as cards from Visa and from Mastercard, plus Apple Pay and Click to Pay, with Wallee Group as the preconfigured acceptance partner.

The E-Com Bundle for shops above CHF 200,000 in turnover lowers the fee for PostFinance Pay and TWINT to 1.3 percent per transaction. Checkout Flex lets a shop choose its own acceptance partners and add methods such as PayPal, American Express or invoices by eBill and QR-bill. Free plug-ins connect PostFinance Checkout to shop systems such as Shopware, WooCommerce, Magento 2 and PrestaShop.

Stake in TWINT

TWINT is the Swiss mobile payment app, and it has more than 6 million users. PostFinance holds a stake in TWINT Ltd as a cooperation participation, as it does in SIX Group and in SWIFT. The other owners of TWINT are BCV, Raiffeisen, UBS, Zürcher Kantonalbank, the financial infrastructure group SIX and the payment company Worldline.

Cash withdrawals at post offices and Postomats fell by 10 percent in 2024, because more customers pay by card or with mobile apps such as TWINT. The PostFinance Card now carries Debit Mastercard as a second brand, so customers can pay with it in shops and online in Switzerland and abroad.

Crypto trading, custody and staking

PostFinance opened crypto trading to its customers on 21 February 2024 and was the first systemically important bank in Switzerland to do so. The service runs with the FINMA-regulated crypto bank Sygnum, keeps the coins in Switzerland and lets customers trade around the clock in e-finance or the app, without a wallet of their own. Single orders and crypto savings plans start at USD 50, and the range grew to 22 cryptocurrencies when six more coins joined in February 2026, among them Stellar and the stablecoin USDC.

By February 2026, customers had opened more than 36,000 crypto portfolios and placed more than 565,000 trades. Staking of Ethereum followed in January 2025 with a minimum of 0.1 ETH, and since mid-August 2026 customers can stake without a fixed term and end a position whenever they choose. Since May 2026, corporate customers and holders of a joint partner account can also trade the 22 cryptocurrencies and stake Ethereum.

Yuh, rating and mortgages through partners

PostFinance and Swissquote launched the finance app Yuh as a joint venture in 2021, and in 2025 Swissquote took over the PostFinance stake. Yuh had more than 300,000 users and made a profit for the first time in 2024. Standard & Poor's rates PostFinance AA with a stable outlook, in line with the credit profile of its owner Swiss Post.

Because postal law bars it from lending, PostFinance feels more pressure on its margins than other Swiss banks do. PostFinance arranges mortgages in cooperation with partner banks such as Münchener Hypothekenbank and Valiant, which carry the full credit risk. The profit of PostFinance for the first half of 2026 was CHF 103 million under the accounting rules for banks.
