Tokenized fund administration

Tokenized fund administration is the back office of a fund whose shares exist as tokens on a blockchain. The fund administrator still values the portfolio and calculates the net asset value, and it also reconciles the token register with its books, processes subscriptions and redemptions against wallets and keeps the list of approved investors current.

The investment strategy and the portfolio of the fund stay the same as in a conventional share class. Administration changes where shares are issued, transferred and redeemed, because those steps now run through a smart contract, and the administrator keeps the blockchain record and the official books in line.

Storage modules are handled in front of a bank vault and server racks.

What changes for the fund administrator

In a conventional fund the fund administrator books subscriptions and redemptions in a database and the transfer agent updates the register. In a tokenized fund the token contract issues new tokens when an investor subscribes and burns them at redemption, so the administrator matches every mint and burn with cash movements and with the net asset value of the day. The administrator also makes sure that only verified investors receive tokens, which standards such as ERC-3643 enforce through an identity check before each transfer.

Tokenized money market funds as the first use

The first tokenized funds with large volumes are money market funds, because their stable price of one dollar or one euro per share fits payments on a blockchain. The Franklin OnChain U.S. Government Money Fund of Franklin Templeton has kept its register on a public blockchain since 2021, and BlackRock launched BUIDL in March 2024 with Securitize as transfer agent. BUIDL pays its yield on chain as new tokens, and the administrator calculates that yield from the same portfolio data as for a classic share class of tokenized money market funds.

Hybrid share classes in Europe

Amundi and CACEIS put a tokenized share class of the money market fund AMUNDI FUNDS CASH EUR on Ethereum, with the first transaction on 4 November 2025. CACEIS runs the order platform and the investor wallets, while the fund keeps its classic share classes, so the administrator values one portfolio and keeps one register for both kinds of shares. Fund administrator Apex Group offers the same model under the name Apex Digital 3.0, with onboarding, administration, transfer agency and reporting for tokenized funds and Tokeny as default partner for the token register.

Upcoming tokenization events in Germany

Germany and Luxembourg

In Germany the Regulation on Crypto Fund Shares has allowed fund shares as tokens since 18 June 2022, and the depositary or a licensed crypto securities registrar appointed by it keeps the register. Luxembourg laws of 2019 and 2021 allow securities to be held and issued in registers on a blockchain, so a Luxembourg UCITS or alternative investment fund can add a tokenized share class without changing its domicile. More on these laws is under tokenization in Luxembourg.

Fund administrator vs custodian

A fund administrator keeps the books of a fund, calculates its net asset value and prepares its reports, while a custodian holds the assets the fund owns. In the European Union a depositary combines custody with the duty to oversee the fund, and it must check the net asset value that the administrator calculates. In a tokenized fund the custodian or depositary keeps the fund assets as before, and the fund tokens sit in the wallets of the investors.

Fund administration vs fund accounting

Fund accounting is the part of fund administration that books trades, values positions and produces the net asset value and the financial statements. Fund administration also covers the investor side, with the register, anti money laundering checks, distributions and reporting to investors and supervisors. Tokenization changes the investor side most, because subscriptions, transfers and redemptions move onto the blockchain while the portfolio accounting stays as before.
