Crypto conferences in Europe
Europe holds more crypto and digital asset conferences than any professional can attend, and they are not substitutes for each other: an institutional conference, a developer conference and a bitcoin-only conference answer different questions. This page sets out how the European conference year is structured, so you can pick by the question you need answered rather than by the size of the event.
The four kinds of event, and what each answers
The institutional conference puts banks, asset managers and supervisors on stage and deals with licensing, custody, settlement and distribution. Go there when you have a mandate to execute and need counterparties and regulatory clarity. The Crypto Assets Conference at Frankfurt School and the European Blockchain Convention in Barcelona work this way.
The developer conference goes into protocol design, scaling and cryptography. Go there when a technical decision depends on where a network is heading, as at EthCC. The single-asset conference covers one asset in depth, as BTC Prague does for bitcoin. The payments and fintech fair treats digital assets as one track among many, which is the shape of Money20/20 Europe in Amsterdam.
How the year is laid out
Spring carries the institutional conferences in the German-speaking market, with Frankfurt holding its digital finance and crypto asset dates close together, followed by the Digital Euro Conference on the same campus. Early summer brings the large developer and bitcoin gatherings, and June is the month of the payments fair in Amsterdam.
September restarts the institutional season, with the Barcelona convention and the autumn dates in Germany and Austria, among them Vienna Blockchain Week. Autumn also carries the conferences on AI in finance, which the overview of AI finance conferences in Europe covers.
Which city for which subject
Frankfurt is the place for regulated capital markets questions, because the supervisors, the exchange group and the Bundesbank sit there; crypto in Frankfurt and tokenization in Frankfurt set out the local picture. Berlin and Munich carry the builder scene, covered on blockchain in Berlin and blockchain in Munich.
Outside Germany, Barcelona and Amsterdam host the large commercial events, Zug and Zurich the Swiss market described under Crypto Valley, and Paris and Cannes the French developer and institutional dates. London remains the center for the quantitative and asset management side.
What is the biggest crypto conference in Europe?
Several events are the largest by different measures, and the organizers publish their own figures: EthCC expects more than 8,000 attendees in Cannes, BTC Prague calls itself the biggest bitcoin event in Europe, and the European Blockchain Convention drew over 6,000 people to Barcelona by press accounts. Size is a poor way to choose, because the useful question is which audience is in the room. A conference with 500 bankers serves a bank better than one with 8,000 developers.
Which conference should a bank send people to?
Send the people whose decisions the agenda matches. A product owner working on tokenized securities belongs at an institutional conference where issuers, custodians and supervisors speak. A compliance officer gets more from a MiCA-heavy program than from a protocol roadmap. An engineer who has to choose infrastructure belongs at a developer conference. Finance Loop members split their travel this way and compare notes afterwards in the network.
What happens in Germany?
Germany's conference year runs through Frankfurt, Berlin and Munich, with university-led events such as the TUM Blockchain Conference alongside the industry dates and the German Blockchain and AI Week. The pages on crypto in Germany and blockchain in Germany describe the market these events serve, and Finance Loop runs its own meetups and webinars between them.
Crypto conferences in Europe and Finance Loop
Finance Loop is the meeting place for digital assets in European finance, and its members plan their conference year together: who goes where, which program is worth the travel, and what came back from it. Finance Loop has been a partner of European conferences over several years and runs its own meetups and webinars between the large dates.
Finance Loop is a professional network and has the goal of driving the adoption of emerging technologies in finance, such as AI, tokenization, stablecoins, and DeFi. Finance Loop helps its members build skills and personal networks in these fields: Investment & Digital Assets, Payments & Digital Money, Digital Infrastructure & Sovereignty, and Risk & Compliance.
