Crypto price feed providers

Crypto price feed providers supply prices, reference rates and index values for digital assets in a form that other systems can use. Banks, asset managers and exchanges connect these feeds to trading, valuation and risk processes. A feed can use one trading venue or combine data from several sources according to a defined method.

Financial institutions need reliable price data to value positions and check whether their records use consistent assumptions. Coverage, update frequency and the handling of unusual trades affect the suitability of a feed for a particular task. A published methodology helps users understand how the supplied price was calculated and what it represents.

What institutions need from a crypto price feed

An exchange's own price ticks up and down with its own order book, and two exchanges rarely print the same number at the same second. A bank that has to value a bitcoin holding, settle a derivative or calculate a fund's net asset value needs one number both sides of a trade can agree on, built with a published methodology and not tied to a single venue.

That number is a reference rate: a benchmark calculated from trades across many exchanges under a fixed, publicly documented methodology, at a fixed time or continuously throughout the day. In the EU, a firm that publishes a reference rate used in a financial instrument, fund or contract is a benchmark administrator under the EU Benchmarks Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2016/1011 (BMR), and needs authorization from a national regulator such as BaFin or the UK's FCA, plus compliance with the IOSCO Principles for Financial Benchmarks. An institution that prices a fund or an ETP against an unregistered benchmark carries a compliance gap its auditor will ask about.

Beyond the methodology, a trading desk cares about latency: how fast a price update reaches the system, in milliseconds for a derivatives desk or once a day for a fund's net asset value calculation. A risk team cares about coverage: how many exchanges and instruments feed into a figure, since a rate built from three venues moves more on a single bad print than one built from thirty. A custody provider or fund administrator cares about a fair value price it can defend to an auditor at month end, which is why reference rates for net asset value calculations, not raw exchange ticks, back most regulated crypto funds.

Kaiko

Kaiko provides crypto market data feeds and calculates benchmarks and custom indices. The firm is a benchmark administrator under the EU Benchmarks Regulation, and S&P Global led a strategic investment that extended the funding round of Kaiko to 110 million dollars. In June 2026 Kaiko bought Amberdata, a provider of derivatives analytics.

CF Benchmarks

CF Benchmarks is a UK FCA-regulated benchmark administrator, part of the Crypto Facilities group that Kraken owns. Its CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate (BRR) prices the iShares Bitcoin Trust of BlackRock, and its CME CF Ether-Dollar Reference Rate prices the iShares Ethereum Trust; both rates also settle CME futures contracts. CF Benchmarks states it has settled over 500 billion dollars of CFTC- and FCA-regulated futures contracts.

CoinDesk Indices

CoinDesk Indices calls itself a provider of trusted and regulated index solutions since 2014, with over 400 BMR-compliant benchmarks and a Bitcoin Price Index it describes as the longest-running digital asset index on the market. The CoinDesk 20 Index underlies the CoinDesk 20 ETF of ProShares, and Morgan Stanley Investment Management and Grayscale Investments both link products to CoinDesk indices. CoinDesk Indices is regulated in the UK by the FCA.

CoinDesk Data

CoinDesk Data is the market data business of CoinDesk, which traded as CCData and before that as CryptoCompare until CoinDesk bought it in 2024. It calculates the benchmarks of CoinDesk Indices and sells trade, order book and onchain data across more than 300 exchanges, with history back to 2010. VanEck and MarketVector hold a strategic investment in the company.

MarketVector

MarketVector, based in Frankfurt and a subsidiary of VanEck, develops, monitors and markets a family of investable indices and is registered with BaFin as a benchmark administrator under the EU Benchmarks Regulation. The Bitcoin and Ethereum Benchmark Rates of MarketVector are licensed to the HODL and ETHV spot ETFs of VanEck, and MarketVector launched its first crypto indices in partnership with CryptoCompare, today CoinDesk Data, back in 2017.

Amberdata

Amberdata provides digital asset data and tools for institutional trading and risk analysis, including the GVOL options analytics platform for derivatives desks. Kaiko announced the acquisition of Amberdata on 2 June 2026, so Amberdata data is now part of the Kaiko product range.

Coin Metrics

Coin Metrics, based in Boston, built network data, reference rates and indexes for the digital asset industry. Trading and portfolio management platform Talos announced its acquisition of Coin Metrics in 2025 for more than 100 million dollars, combining the data and benchmark indexes of Coin Metrics with the order and execution management system of Talos for institutional clients.

MSCI and Compass Financial Technologies

Compass Financial Technologies, founded in Lausanne in 2017, built indices that track more than 5 billion dollars in assets, including an EU Benchmark Regulation-compliant DeFi index live on Bloomberg and LSEG and licensable to product issuers. MSCI acquired Compass, completing the integration in 2026 to add crypto and other alternative-asset index calculation to its existing multi-asset benchmark business.

Boerse Stuttgart Digital

Boerse Stuttgart Digital calls itself Europe's leading modular one-stop shop for crypto trading and custody, running Europe's first regulated exchange (MTF) for digital assets and Germany's first BaFin MiCAR-licensed crypto custody provider. The firm lists more than 200 institutional clients, including KfW and DZ Bank, and reports over 5 billion euros in assets under custody across 70 tradable cryptocurrencies.

Lukka

Lukka, founded in 2014, supplies crypto reference data, fair value prices and benchmarks to fund administrators, asset managers and banks. S&P Global, State Street and Soros Fund Management invested in Lukka, and S&P Dow Jones Indices built crypto indices on Lukka data in 2021.

Tardis.dev

Tardis.dev provides tick-by-tick order book snapshots, trades, open interest, funding rates, options chains and liquidation data across more than 50 spot and derivatives exchanges, covering over 200,000 instruments. Tardis.dev reports more than 500 customers and partners, mainly quantitative trading firms and researchers who need detailed order book and trade data.

CoinAPI

CoinAPI is a market data API that collects trades, quotes and order books from more than 400 exchanges and delivers them over REST, WebSocket and FIX or as flat files in Amazon S3. Trading firms and developers use it when they need data from many exchanges in one symbol format.

CoinGecko

CoinGecko calls itself the largest independent crypto data aggregator, tracking more than 22,000 assets across over 1,000 exchanges, with a free public API and GeckoTerminal for DEX prices. It serves retail apps and portfolio trackers well; a fund administrator or an ETP issuer that needs a regulated, auditable reference rate uses one of the BMR-registered providers in the table above instead.

CoinMarketCap

CoinMarketCap, founded in 2013 and owned by Binance since 2020, ranks crypto assets by market capitalization and offers a free basic API. Like CoinGecko it suits private investors and apps, while regulated products settle against the reference rates of a benchmark administrator.

Off-chain data vendors and onchain oracle networks

Every provider above delivers data off-chain, into a trading desk, a risk system or a fund administrator's spreadsheet. Dune Market Data Feeds in the table take their trades from the chain and still belong to the off-chain group, because they stream those trades to a subscriber like other market data feeds and write no price back onchain. A different kind of provider, the oracle network, writes a price directly onto a blockchain so a smart contract can read it without calling an external API at all. Chainlink and other oracle networks aggregate prices from sources such as the providers above and several exchanges, then publish the result onchain for lending protocols, derivatives platforms and tokenized funds to use as collateral pricing. Top oracle networks ranks the leading oracle networks by proven institutional and protocol use, the same standard the table above applies to off-chain providers.

Finance Loop and crypto price data

Reliable price data sits behind every trade, valuation and risk model that the Finance Loop track Investment & Digital Assets covers. Crypto market data from exchanges, aggregators and onchain sources differ, and MiCA sets requirements for a trading venue's own data; oracle networks provide onchain delivery, including the Deutsche Börse Market Data + Services partnership with Chainlink that publishes Xetra and Eurex data onchain for smart contracts to read. MarketVector Indexes and Chainlink have both held panels at TechQuartier in Frankfurt: at the MarketVector Indexes panel, Martin Leinweber presented a method for choosing among crypto assets, and the Chainlink panel, a pre-event of CAC 2024, opened with the decentralized oracle networks of Chainlink.

What is a crypto reference rate?

A crypto reference rate is a single price calculated from trades across many exchanges under a published, fixed methodology, built so a fund, an ETP or a derivatives contract can settle against one number both sides trust, instead of one exchange's own last trade.

Why does an ETF need a regulated reference rate?

A regulated ETF or ETP has to value its holdings and calculate its net asset value on a defensible basis. A reference rate registered under the EU Benchmarks Regulation or supervised by the UK FCA gives the fund a methodology it can point to in an audit. A single exchange price is easier for a manipulator to move.

What is the difference between a price feed and a benchmark administrator?

A price feed is the data itself, streamed or pushed to a subscriber. A benchmark administrator is the regulated entity legally responsible for the methodology behind a specific reference rate, such as CF Benchmarks for the Bitcoin Reference Rate; the administrator often licenses its rate through several feeds and data vendors.

Do crypto data providers need a MiCA license?

MiCA licenses a crypto-asset service provider for activities such as custody, trading and advice under Regulation (EU) 2023/1114, Article 3(1)(16); supplying market data alone is not among the listed services. A firm that also administers a reference rate used in a regulated product instead needs authorization under the EU Benchmarks Regulation.
